The Original Text Game (In Java) - Click here to play (Cannot save)
The original text-based game by Infocom, available on the official Douglas Adams site, was released in the 1980's (and later rereleased as a "classic" by Infocom) with no graphics (computer games didn't have graphics at that point in history) and nearly no instructions, aside from a hint booklet that consisted of hints written in invisible ink, where you had to highlight the hints with a special marker in order to read them. You were given a description of your environment (ie - "You are in a dark room"), and you had to actually type in what you wanted your character to do (ie - "Turn on light") during each turn. Basic words (such as go, north, west, wear, eat, fish) were pre-programmed into the game, and only those words would work as valid commands. Despite this fact, most people insisted on typing in obscene things for the computer to do to itself, in which case they were usually given some stock error phrase such as "I don't know how to **** myself with the chicken." Ahhh, the memories. Note that you will have to scroll to the bottom and type in the serial number from the screenshot in order to access the game.
